Intro

Situated on an island in Jakarta's last mangrove park, this ongoing installation explores architecture as a tool for ecological engagement. Developed with NaJa & deOstos and Byo-Living, it invites reflection on how built structures can operate beyond human use, shifting focus to environmental co-inhabitation.

Process

The design uses rattan and coconut fibre, chosen for their organic properties and ability to support life. The prototyping and fabrication process combines architectural techniques with biological input. Wildlife interaction with the installation is monitored and recorded, while the structure is intentionally designed to decompose over time.

Goal

To test how architecture can stimulate biodiversity and support non-human users. By studying the structure's occupation and decomposition, the team aims to generate insights into material life cycles and environmental symbiosis, positioning design as a regenerative act.

Result

As the installation weathers and decays, it becomes both habitat and data source. Silent public tours offer visitors glimpses into this slow ecological process, with findings informing future natural material applications that foster architectural coexistence across various global biomes.
